State College (“Happy Valley”) is known for its welcoming atmosphere and a wide range of amenities, including excellent public schools, healthcare facilities, a fantastic public library, and a variety of dining options from casual eateries to fine dining. Bike-friendly streets and the walkability of downtown are clearly in evidence.

Postdocs are encouraged to balance their research activities with forming a connection to the town. We value who you are and where you come from! State College offers a rich cultural scene and many recreational activities. Locals are likely to show up en masse for celebrations like State College Pride, Penn State Great Insect Fair, and the Penn State Homecoming, and you’ll meet tourists, too. The town is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including Rothrock State Forest and several parks, good for hiking, biking, and outdoor sports. For those who enjoy sports, Penn State’s athletic events, particularly football games at Beaver Stadium, offer excitement and an overwhelming sense of community spirit, though ticket prices are steep! With a variety of shopping centers, local markets, and entertainment venues, we hope that State College adds to a balanced lifestyle where postdocs can find both relaxation and fun outside of work.

The central region of Pennsylvania experiences a varied climate throughout the year and four distinct seasons. Winters are typically cold, with occasional snowfall and temperatures often dipping below freezing. Spring brings milder temperatures and blooming flora, although it can also be a rainy season. Summers are increasingly warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-90s Fahrenheit. Fall is marked by cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage.

Tips for Enjoying State College Life as a Postdoc:

  • Explore Nature: Take advantage of the nearby state forests and parks for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and camping. For a rejuvenating stroll during your work day, visit Penn State’s arboretum, including the Pollinator and Bird Garden.
  • Utilize University Resources: Penn State offers numerous resources for postdocs, including libraries, career and professional development workshops, and offerings by the Penn State Postdoctoral Society.
  • Enjoy Local Events: Bookmark Happy Valley Events to join cheerful local opportunities for community engagement.  Check out annual events like the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, Homecoming, and Farmers’ Markets to experience the local culture. This region of Pennsylvania is often distinguished by its Amish population, recognizable by their plain clothes and non-electric modes of transportation.
