Event Description

This virtual program will be capped at 50 participants. It is hosted by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Grant Training Center.

Telling the story in a compelling, convincing, specific and clear manner, and identifying key benefits to the donor’s request

1:15 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Goal

Addressing the final destination of the proposal

1:30 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Objectives

How objectives will be met in specific and measurable terms

Breakout Room Exercise: Groups will write objectives for individual proposals or fix those in sample grants; followed by class discussion

2:15 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Activities

How to relate each activity to the parent objective

Breakout Room Exercise: Groups will write activities that will accomplish the objectives for individual proposals or fix those in sample grants; followed by class discussion

2:45 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Timelines, Personnel and Logic Model

  • Timelines for each activity
  • Quality of key personnel
  • Project management and deliverables through the logic model

3:15 p.m.  BREAK

3:30 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Evaluation

  • How the project will be measured and the results related to the donor
  • Qualitative and quantitative evaluations and resources to ensure accountability

3:45 p.m.  Proposal Elements: Budgets

  • Budget formats, including personnel and non-personnel costs
  • Relating each item to a timeline in the form of a Gantt Chart
  • Facilities & Resources

4:00 p.m.  Review Proposals – Breakout Rooms

  • Panelists review and score one proposal
  • The discussion will cover such issues as:
    • Why did the grant receive the scores it did?
    • Using the guidelines that were discussed earlier, how could the grant be improved?

4:45 p.m.  Discuss Scores and Reasons for Funding or Not Funding

5:15 p.m.  Summary, Q&A and Next Steps
