Hiking

The Penn State Postdoctoral Society organizes several outings to local hiking spots throughout the year. Participants can hike, picnic, or sit and enjoy the sunshine! We look forward to hosting educational, outdoor experiences in which postdocs from diverse academic backgrounds can work towards common goals: fun and friendship! For each event, bring comfortable but supportive boots/hiking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a positive attitude!

Keep an eye out for emails for the date and time or see the calendar of events!

Stay tuned! We will continue to update and post local hiking spots below!

Sand Mountain Trail

Looking for another local adventure this weekend? Why not try a hike on the Sand Mountain Trail circuit in near Poe Valley State Park? Choose your own adventure along on this system of well maintained, multi-use trails that are well marked and easy to follow. This would also be a great trail to try out some mountain biking!

To get to the trail head from State College, go out on 322 East and exit on the right for the Seven Mountains Campground. Take the overpass to the other side of 322 to get to Sand Mountain Rd. Follow Sand Mountain Rd. for 1.5 miles (past the Seven Mountains Scout Camp) to the Sand Mountain Trailhead parking area on your right (at tip of knife).

Bear Meadows Natural Area

Looking to get some fresh air, a little exercise, and distance from other humans this weekend? Why not try a hike at Bear Meadows Natural Area in Rothrock State Forest? This easy loop hike is approximately 3.7 miles long (~2 hrs) with no hills and a well marked trail that’s easy to follow. Make sure you wear boots as some part of the trail can be muddy at certain times of the year.

To get to the trail head from State College, go out on 322 East and turn right into Bear Meadows Rd at the entrance to Tussey Mountain. Follow Bear Meadows Rd for ~2.5 miles and the parking area for this trail will be on your right (at tip of knife).

Make sure you bring weather appropriate clothing (be prepared to walk through some mud).
